Team WI is hotly anticipating GW2, we all prepurchased it already. I think we've all been itching to get back into the MMO universe and guild wars 2 seems to be the ticket at this time.
We've been beta testing the game this weekend for one of their "beta weekends" and all of us agree.......IT ROCKS. May post a review after this weekend if anyone is interested. It doesn't seem as though anyone in this guild are interested in this game, but if you are curious let me know.
I'm not good at doing reviews so I'll just make some points that I feel sum up the game in long story shorts for those that don't know much about the game. I've played it for about 25 hours during a beta weekend and this is what I got from it. 1. This game is for people who don't really have the time to raid (there are no "raids") 2. If you love pvp, or at least like it, you will love this game because WvWvW is simply amazing. WvW means world vs. world. Or essentially Server vs. Server vs. Server. This makes it so no particular server can dominate. 3 servers are against eachother in a HUGE (like seriously) map full of many different object points. Things like a castle, outposts, mini castles, tons of stuff for you and your server mates to take over to give your PVE people buffs. There are siege weapons that can be built and used (things like an arrow cart, cannon, golems, trebuchet (sp?), battering rams, etc) which adds another fun aspect to the game. You can go around with your friends and take over smaller points, or you can join a big group of people in taking a larger objective. You choose, there is action everywhere. The rankings get reset every 2 or 3 days (i forget which) and then you will be against two new servers. 3. All pvp is done at the max lvl (80). Starting at level 2 you can switch to pvp and it will scale you up to lvl 80, full armor and everything. 4. There is no healing class. Every class has it's own healing abilities so there is no relying on one class to keep you alive. You more try to evade damage than just heal through it. 5. The combat system is pretty innovative imo. You have 5 skills that you use, on top of 5 utility skills for each weapon you can use. For instance I played a thief mostly and I could use a bow, 2 daggers, a sword and dagger, a sword and pistol, or dagger and pistol. While fighting I can swap out any of these weapon combos. and it will immediately switch my 5 skills to correspond to the weapon/s that I chose to equip. Your skills aren't just hit whenever they are available (i.e. WoW). They are very situational and have to be used wisely. It really makes you think and makes it a lot more appealing. 6. While running around the world every mob is attackable by any person. If i'm attacking a mob and someone runs up and fights it too we both get the same max xp (as if we solo'd it), both get to loot it, and both get quest credit (if applicable). So no more ganking of mobs. This also is nice because at any point an event could start that requires a lot of people to accomplish. For instance I went over to Docc's and I saw him and Ereinion at lvl 15 essentially fighting a raid mob that they kinda stumbled upon with about 10 other people. They had to fight the enormous mob, destroy portals, kill waves of adds, etc that you would normally do in a raid. It of course wasn't as difficult as a end lvl raid, but it gave you that feel and they were only at lvl 15 out of 80. Things like this are all around the game at every lvl adding quite a bit of excitement to PVE. 7. Something I found kinda cool and at least note worthy was that every level requires the same amount of xp to advance to the next lvl. So no more levels from hell or anything of the sort. 8. The game is very beautiful and big as hell. So lots to explore. 9. There is no subscription fee in any way. You just buy the game and you have EVERYTHING the game has to offer.
I know I'm missing some other awesome aspects of the game since I'm getting distracted by my son, but this is kind of the basics. If interested I can elaborate more.
Oh another nice aspect imo was that when questing you didn't have to go to a npc to get a quest, or turn in one for that matter. You would just be running in a area and all of a sudden one would pop up. If you chose to stay in that general area and finish it, you'd get the rewards as soon as you finished it. If you left the area the quest would just disappear and be saved for you if you ever return to the approx. area and pop back up again. These quests would range from water the farmers crops, escort a supply elephant to it's destination, to help kill this massive wasp that so happens 15 other real people are already attacking and dying from. It really, really, made exploring that much more fun.
1. Hey krycek. 2. I think the WvWvW is 2 weeks in duration? could be wrong here. and there is some things the player can buy from their market. The one thing that was a little bit a of turn off were the magical chests that the player could only use keys purchased from Anet to open. I have no idea what these contain I cant imagine you need to buy them since the game isn't suppose to be a about a grind for gear. 3. There were a few issues the arrised from beta but Anet seems to be taking the feedback and sounds like they will change them. You cannot at the moment sign up a team for the "competitive" 8vs8 pvp. THe player are able to join the same server but the teams are shuffled atm. Overflow instances were kinda a pain, you would be separated from your group and put in a overflow instance a lot of the time. 4. The game was fun. Its still a MMO so the basic gameplay is still there just modified in a very enjoyable way. If your shooting arrows and a mob walks in front of your target you will hit them. If a tree is in the way you will hit that. You techinally dont have to target anything and you can still use your skills and be able to hit things. Warriors in close range swing their sword they will hit all targets in the range of their weapon. The gameplay does take some getting use to, I tried a warrior our and was use to standing tall and taking a beating....yeah you can't do that. To be good at this game you need to use you dodge. 5. There is a lot to do. The world is big, and events are going on all over. There are you typical slay 10 mob type quests but then there are also quest where bandits are attacking outpost, if you defend them your guys will move in and set up a new outpost the player can use, following that the players will go on a offense and attack the thieves. This can go on for awhile.
To sum it up the game is fun. If you want to raid I am not sure if its for you. If you like pvp and castle siege type pvp this game is great. If you are more interested in 5 mannish content for pve thats what this game is designed for. I think its defiently worth a try, Is it the the most ground breaking thing ever no. Is it changed enough to feel different then other mmos I think so. I had fun and can see myself putting lots of hours into this game.
