Star Wars: The Old Republic developer BioWare is defending its recent decision to ban players for what is commonly known in the massively multiplayer online role-playing game community as “gold farming” — the practice of harvesting large amounts of in-game currency in order to sell the gold (or, in this case, credits) to other players for real cash.

“To be completely clear, while players may choose to travel to Ilum earlier than the recommended level (40+) and may loot containers if they can get to them, in the cases of those customers that were warned or temporarily suspended, they were systematically and repeatedly looting containers in very high numbers resulting in the game economy becoming unbalanced,” he said.

What an absolute load of shite. Warning players for looting containers in any quantity is ridiculous, if you don't want them to be able to do it then force them to fight mobs or remove them (which I think they did do in the patch today), don't punish players for playing the fucking game.  Admit you screwed up and overreacted, trying to defend that position is just idiotic.

The only way I would be okay with them taking that stance is if "systematically" was much more complex than they let on.  If there was a method that was taking advantage of a clear exploit, and they were tracking only that exploit method, then I'm ok with it.  Then in the release they used "systematically" to avoid giving details of the exploit.

If, instead, it's just language to mean that they did it on purpose, then it's bullshit.

Yeah I'm taking it as meaning continued, mainly because of the complaints on the boards from people who were warned about it and since they removed spawns and didn't fix spawns I'm doubting there was any exploit.

Yeah if those reports are accurate, then this is "too far".  Anyone active enough to have taken advantage of this is also active enough to read any official comments BioWare would make about fixing this.  That, in itself, would have been enough.  Simply publicly saying,

"Being able to access loot containers in Ilum has been addressed in an update today, keeping the rewards more in line with the intended level of the looter."

Sending the message that BioWare is aware, and will do their best to quickly patch unintended risk/reward ratios.  That should have been enough.
